Top Tip Tuesday 10

It's the last tip for Louise at this time... Thanks Louise for the time you have done for this.  The tips were all very good!  Do you guys know what that means?  We need more tips, so if you have a tip please email me.  I hope to keep this feature going!  Thanks again Louise and here's the last tip!

Avoid copyright conflict

This article outlines some actions which you can take to avoid being accused of, or finding yourself at the receiving end of copyright theft. The list is by no means exhaustive, but it does go a long way towards ensuring you don’t get entangled in any (potentially expensive) Copyright theft battles.

1. Always ask permission before copying text or images from another blog/website.

In my experience people are usually very happy to have you use their work so long as credit is given. That leads me on to my next point…always ask the person how they would like their work credited. Most people seem happy to just have a link to their website/blog, but some may wish to have a specific link used instead. For example, when people post free backgrounds made using my digital scrapbooking kits, I prefer a link to purchase the kit, rather than a general link to my blog.

2. Always ask the copyright owner’s permission before altering a graphic or using it for any other purpose than it was designed for.

This is a huge area of concern for blog designers. For example, if I make a header and then the user resizes that header and crops it for use as a profile picture, this is actually a breach of copyright because the image has been used for something other than intended. It’s like buying a 52 inch TV and then going back to the store and walking out with a 16 inch version of it because you need something smaller as well. Just because you CAN resize an image a use it for a different purpose, it doesn’t mean you SHOULD. In many cases, the copyright owner won’t charge you anyway; they just like to be asked.

Some designers do not allow their graphics or blog designs to be altered by another designer. All changes must be done by them and they may charge for this. This is often done because coding is commercially sensitive information. In the case of images, it’s best to contact the original designer anyway as they will have the “unflattened” version of the image, which is easier to work with and provides a better finish anyway.

3. Get a copyright statement.

This might be a simple statement at the bottom of your blog; something along the lines of “Do not copy content without permission”. Or you can put in place a Creative Commons agreement which outlines specifically what can and can not be done with your work. Go to Creative Commons for more info.

4. If you have permission to use an image or text, write “used with permission” underneath the image or somewhere within the text.

That should stop people wondering and reporting you to the copyright owner.

5. Use image watermarks.

These don’t need to be fancy. I tend to use a simple one such as my blog address typed onto an image.

6. Know where and how to complain.

If you find your content on another blog, try emailing the owner and ask them to remove the offending content. Also, I recommend adding a comment underneath the post (if possible) so that people know the true source of the material. If the blog in question is a Blogger blog, then I’m afraid Blogger will not be showing much interest in your case, you will need to file a DCMA against the culprit. If you search Google, you will find lots of information on filing a DMCA with Google (the owner of Blogger). Each blogging platform has their own way of doing this, and it isn’t usually very obvious how to navigate the process.

Have you ever been in copyright conflict with anybody? How did you resolve it?

I hope you found this feature useful, if you have any questions or comments, then leave a comment below and I'll do my best to answer it :)

Top Tip Tuesday 9

How's your blog coming?  I hope it is going good!  This is the 9th feature!  Thanks Louise... you have done a lot!  Here is the next Top Tip:
Take a rest occasionally: 6 top tips for avoiding blogger burnout

1. Set specific days/times when you intend to do any blogging related activities

If your blogging involves more than just writing a blog post, a schedule is a great idea. Always remember to build some flexibility into your schedule though as I can almost guarantee that something will crop up when you least expect it. I have published my schedule on my blog, so that readers can see when progress is likely to occur with designs etc. In my case, the schedule needed to include writing posts, making freebies, working on customer projects etc, but it gives you an idea of the level of detail that you might like to include.

I found that by allocating specific days and times for “work” time, I get more benefit from time off. I think it has a lot to do with allowing myself to become entirely "detached" from my work. Before I set these boundaries, I felt guilty for having any time off at all, but now it’s “officially” my time off, I have stopped feeling guilty. The added bonus is that, because I’m less tired, I’m more productive when I do work.

2. Allow yourself to take a break once in a while

It’s one thing taking a break occasionally, but it’s another thing entirely allowing yourself to take a break. I think this is easier if you have a schedule, because then it is “officially” your break, or non-work time. If a schedule seems a bit too rigid for you, then set small tasks such as “once I’ve written a couple of paragraphs on this post, I’m going to take a 10 minute break”.

3. Make some family time

This applies to everyone, not just mothers. It doesn’t matter if you’re a daughter, wife, brother; somebody loves you and needs you and wants to spend time with you! Don’t forget that there is a life outside of your blog. In my own life, I make sure we do something fun together at least once a month - such as a trip out or a meal. Being away from the house means that I’m not distracted by my blog/graphics and hubby gets me all to himself. I also make sure we do something together each day, whether it’s just watching a TV program together or talking about random stuff.

4. Baby steps

Some blogging tasks can seem a bit overwhelming, so break them down into smaller, bite-sized chunks.
Recently, it took me hours (and hours!) to go through all my freebies and re-categorise them. Take a look, it’s so much easier to find what you’re looking for now, but would have done this if I’d had to do it in one go? No way! I broke the task down into 2 hour slots and took it from there. You can do this with your blogging tasks to. For example, write one post and then take a break before starting the next one.

5. Keep a notebook with you

If you find yourself always thinking and pre-occupied over your blog, keep a notebook with you so that you can write down any ideas that come into your head. This allows you to instantly forget about the idea and carry on with your day. Freedom from thinking about your blog shouldn’t be under-estimated!

6. Get help

We’re all human and sometimes it all gets a bit too much. Have a friend or family member who you can call on when needed. It’s a small request to ask somebody to research something on your behalf, but it goes a long way towards helping you meet your blogging goals. You may also like to find people who can write a post for you occasionally, or help you with some admin tasks. You might like to consider getting a blogging buddy who can help you out with this, but don’t forget to reciprocate!

It’s good to have an action plan for if you’re still feeling exhausted despite making efforts to maintain a good work-life balance. My blog is my “work” and I make income through it so the stakes are higher, but even I turn work away sometimes. It isn’t good business sense, but it just has to be this way sometimes.

What do you do to avoid blogger burnout?

Top Tip Tuesday 8

Here is a great tip by Louise!  If you have a tip you find useful please email me at byutatortot@gmail.com

Give something back to the blogging community

Since we get so much out of our blogging experience, I am a firm believer in giving something back to the blogging community. Giving something back to the blogging community has a number of benefits; it give us a warm, fuzzy feeling inside, it makes other people happy and it can attract more visitors to your blog.

You can give things back in a number of ways, and it doesn’t (necessarily) need to be too time consuming. Here are a few ways in which you could give back to the blogging community.

Sponsor a giveaway

Everybody loves something for free and giveaways do attract more people to your blog. The caveat here is that some people will choose to follow simply because they want to enter the giveaway, but bear in mind that some of these may convert to loyal followers. An active blog also attracts more followers as many bloggers like to be involved in the hustle and bustle of a busy blog.

You could host a giveaway, or if you’re feeling really generous, why not sponsor a giveaway on other blogs? I regularly do this by offering things such as free blog graphics and designs and they’re always very popular. It’s a good way to attract more visitors to your own blog too as people will click over from the blog hosting the giveaway.

Sponsor a person

If your blog makes money you might want to think about providing a sponsorship. This doesn’t have to be a huge amount of money. For example, every last year I sponsored a blog owner to attend a blogging conference. The reader got a lot out of this experience and that made me feel good!

Offer freebies

As I said before, everyone loves a freebie. Is there something that you could offer your readers? A free e-book? A free “how to” guide? I offer a freebie on my blog once a week and I know that many of my readers enjoy the anticipation of wondering what this week’s freebie will be. This again brings in extra visitors too.

I also run a free blog makeover program for people who blog for therapy (I’m not suggesting you do this…because that would just be copying my idea LOL) but if you get inventive I’m sure you could come up with some ideas that are just as popular.

Donate your time by guest blogging

I don’t know about you but I like reading guest blogs on other peoples blogs. It’s a change from the norm and the change of voice and writing style keeps me interested. You could help out a fellow blogger, especially one who might be struggling to update their blog, by offering to wrote an article for their blog. Guest blogging also benefits you by getting a little exposure too :)

Reply to comments

If a visitor is kind enough to leave a comment, it is only fair that their comment is listened to and replied to, in my opinion. This is “give and take” at its most basic really. Don’t underestimate how happy you can make your readers feel when you reply to their comment with a well thought out comment.

Linky Love

Everyone wants exposure for their blog, so why not give some “linky love” by rewarding those readers who send visitors to your blog? They will appreciate it…and I think it’s only fair. I have 3 main blogs (all failry large) that send most of my visitors, but I have been thinking of selecting a lesser known blog each time I give linky love as I think it’s good to recognize that effort too.

Help other bloggers be successful

I have seen debates before where people ponder the responsibility of larger blog owners helping smaller or newer blog owners. Personally, I do feel it is my responsibility to help people be successful with their blogging, that’s why I offer free designs and tutorials. Maybe you could pair up with another blogger and be their blog coach or blog busy perhaps? It’s great to have somebody who you can bounce ideas off.

Give them exposure

You can help fledgling bloggers by putting them in touch with other people in their niche or by talking about their blog in your posts. I have a regular Blogger Uncovered feature whereby I interview a follower. This allows me to learn more about my followers, but also gives them and their blog some exposure too.

What other ways can you think of giving something back to the blogging community?

Top Tip Tuesday 7

It's the first 2011 tip but we are already at Tip 7!  A great thanks to Louise who has a few more tips for us.  After that who wants to give us a tip?  Eh?  Email me at byutatortot@gmail.com.  Enjoy this next tip!

Be polite, honest and act with integrity…blogging netiquette

Today’s tip is short and sweet, but goes a long way towards helping you make and keep loyal blog friends.

  • If you take a freebie off a blog, say thank you
  • Don’t copy or take anything unless you have permission
  • If you copy something and re-use it, give the original person the credit (a link, as a minimum, is nice). Nobody likes plagiarism.
  • If you make a mistake, apologise
  • If you don't know, say so
  • If you wouldn't want your post to be shown in the national news or if you wouldn't want your family to see it, then don't post it.
  • Always think twice before publishing potentially hurtful remarks, even if they are true. Just because you CAN publish something, doesn’t mean that it is morally correct to do so. Remember the old saying “if you can’t say anything nice, don’t say anything at all”.

Can you think of anything else which should be blogging netiquette?

Top Tip Tuesday 6

These tips are coming a long?  Are they helping?  Leave us your blog link so we can see!  Louise has another great tip for us today!  Please leave a comment for feedback!

Ask for (and use) feedback

You can help your readers by making sure that your blog and its content meets their needs. The following tips explain how to ask for and use any feedback that you do receive. Always only ask for feedback if you're prepared to follow though, otherwise it’s a waste of your reader’s time.

Here are some ways in which you can collect feedback:

  • Asking them to leave comments on a blog post
  • Use a survey website such as survey monkey
  • Create a form using html
  • Create a web form using Google Docs

Once you have digested your results, remember to share them with your readers and let them know about any changes which you might implement based on the results. This shows your readers that you are listening to them and value their contribution.

Have you used feedback in order to improve your blog? How did you go about it? Did your results confirm your suspicions on anything?

Top Tip Tuesday 5

I hope you blog is coming along with the four past tips!  Here is another one done by Louise:

Be consistent: 6 ways to improve consistency

Today’s top tip is “be consistent”. You can help your readers by keeping certain things consistent. These probably do seem obvious, but you’d be surprised how many people do these!

1. Don't keep renaming your blog

Renaming your blog all the time can lead to confusion and frustration for your readers. Imagine getting used to a blog and then landing on it one day only to find it looks completely different and has a different name. You can laugh, but it happens! If you really must change your blog name, tell people first, especially if you’re also going to change the design too.

2. Don’t keep changing your blog URL

This isn’t good for SEL because it essentially means that none of the links you currently have out there point to your blog. Sure they can be changed, but it takes time to build up search engine recognition and changing your URL all the time stops you building up this recognition. It’s best from an SEO point of view if you can keep the same URL. Trust me on this one. My Google PR was 4 or 5 before I bought my own domain name (effective changing my URL) and now my PR is 0 and has been for months. I have no idea if it will ever go up again :(

3. Don’t keep deleting your blog and setting up new ones

This is linked to points 1-3 above really. Creating new blogs all the time means that your readers need to re-subscribe/re-follow and causes confusion and frustration. Whilst you want to keep people stimulated, avoid doing things which cause annoyance.

4. Keep something consistent in your blog design

When you change your blog design you can help your readers understand that they have landed on your blog by keeping something consistent between each design. This is essentially your branding so it’s important to get it right. It might be your colour scheme, font or a logo for example. In my own designs, I usually keep the lovebird logo and just vary it by resizing and recolouring it

5. Get some posting memes/themes

Not only does it save you having to think about what to post on a given day, it also helps provide some structure and consistency to your blog. If you haven’t got any ideas, why not ask your readers what kind of themes and regular features they’d like to see?

In what ways are you consistent with your blog? Any areas where you could improve consistency?

As we move on the journey to help your blog to become more successful I hope you have learned something new each week!  Do you have something you would like to share with us?  Please email me at byutatortot@gmail.com!

Louise has our next tip:

Do some housekeeping: keeping your blog tidy

Picture this…you’re getting ready for work…you find a sock but you can’t find the matching sock. You were too busy to put your laundry away last night so you just left everything strewn all over your room. 10 minutes later you still haven’t found it, so you give up and go to work in a pair of your old holey socks.

Navigating blogs can be a bit like that…sometimes, they’re so cluttered you can’t find what you’re looking for, so you eventually give up. It’s all a matter of housekeeping and all you need to do is keep on top of it by spending a few minutes every week doing a few little jobs. Here are a few suggestions about how you can keep on top of things.

Delete any old posts which you no longer need, things like your old price lists and posts that are no longer needed or linked to. Be careful not to delete anything which other people may have linked to. Things I delete are posts where I’ve said things like “don’t forget to enter the giveaway before it closes tomorrow” or “the giveaway winner was…..”. I keep those up for a week or two and then delete them. Avoid deleting anything that search engines may refer to. Articles and special features are best kept because search engines love those and you don’t want people getting a page not found error.

Keep blinkies to a minimum as they can be distracting and prevent people finding what they’re looking for. Maybe just post 1 at a time and change them each month.

Keep your sidebars free of clutter. If you have some sidebar content which is repetitive, add it to a post and put a link to it in your sidebar instead. Things like blog awards and blog buttons repeat (ie you have lots of them). These work well stored in a post a just linked to the sidebar. This will save your visitors having to wade through all that clutter to get to the important stuff. Your sidebars (IMO) should be kept for things that you particularly NEED people to see, or things which they will find useful, like your archive.

Separate sidebar content by adding a title to the widget and adding a line underneath each title. The title then acts as a border which separates your sidebar content…more stylishly than just having that awful dotted border (that everyone wants to remove) at the bottom of each sidebar element.

What do you do to keep your blog free of clutter?

I hope you found this feature useful, if you have any questions or comments, then leave a comment below and I'll do my best to answer it :)

Top Tip Tuesday 3

This is our third Top Tip Tuesday!  Have you enjoyed it?  If you have a tip you would like to share please email me at byutatortot@gmail.com!  Thanks

Engage your readers: 6 ways to keep them engaged

Today’s top tip is “engage your readers”. Keeping your readers engaged not only stops them being bored and makes them more likely to come back to your blog, but it entices more readers to your blog too. Think about it…you regularly read 2 blogs, one where the poster has one sided discussions about themselves and one where the poster asks for your opinion on things. You only have time to visit one blog each day, which would you choose?

Here are some ways in which you could engage your readers.

1. Write thought provoking posts

Write a thought provoking post and ask your readers for their thoughts. Aim to be thought provoking but not controversial, if you don’t want confrontation.

2. Ask for readers opinions at every opportunity

Ask your readers’ opinions on everything from your blog design to your new widget etc. It can be anything really, just engage them in something.

3. Create opportunities for people to join in

You can encourage reader input by starting a post where other people can create a similar post and link their posts to your. You can use tools such as Mr Linky to do this. I use this feature for the weekly challenge that I host on my photography blog.

4. Ask for guest bloggers

There’s no better way to engage with your blog readers than by having them write for it! This offers your readers the chance to have their name seen by other people and maybe pick up a few follows for their own blog. It’s a win-win situation.

5. Ask what your readers want

Ultimately, you’re writing for them, so find out what interests them

6. Change things around once in a while

Bored readers are not usually well engaged, so remember to change things round occasionally – whether it’s your memes, features or even your blog design.

Always remember that a blog which engages people will draw in the visitors (or should I say “repeat visitors”), whereas one where the posts are all one sided isn’t likely to be terribly popular. Ask for opinions, feedback etc

How do you keep your readers interested and engaged?

I hope you found this feature useful, if you have any questions or comments, then leave a comment below and I'll do my best to answer it :)

Top Tip Tuesday 2

Another feature from Louise you help you with your blog!  Have a tip you want to share?  Email me at byutatortot@gmail.com!

Provide regular content

One of the key requirements for any blog is to provide regular content. If you post erratically or leave long gaps between posts, then expect people to forget that you exist, delete you from their feeds and have no personal attachment to you or your blog. If you want your blog to be welcoming and active, you need to keep people inspired and interested by providing varied, regular content.

For most blogs, I’d say you should aim to publish 3 times a week or more. If your blog is in a very small niche, it may not be possible to do this, so aim for maybe one post a week or month…whatever you choose, be consistent so that your readers know when to expect the next post. If you are struggling to think of post content then you could try following some of these hints:

1. Create a few themes so that you don't need to think what to post about. For example, I have Tutorial Tuesday and Freebie Friday as well as Blogger Uncovered and Portfolio Post. I just have one request though…think of your own theme names, there's nothing more annoying than finding every blog of the same theme has the same posts with the same names. I get this a lot with my Portfolio Post feature...don't be that blogger!

2. Make a posting schedule in advance, I write mine a month in advance. I add all my themes to it and then fill in the gaps with updates and other interesting stuff.

3. Ask your readers what features and posts they would like to see - that way you can always be sure your content is applicable to your readers

4. If you're going to be away for a while tell people

What kind of themes or memes do you have on your blog? Do you write a posting schedule or do something different?

Top Tip Tuesday

So I mentioned this before and I hope it is going to turn out good.  Louise from Adori Graphics has been kind to start us off with our first handful of tips.  Beyond that you can give BYUTATORTOT followers a tip you find helpful to blogging.

Today's first tip is...

Reply to your comments

I believe this is one of the most important rules in blogging and, if there's just one thing you take away from my "top tips" feature, it is that you should reply to your comments!

Why is it important? Well imagine this. You land on a blog for the first time and think "hey I have a lot in common with this girl, I'll leave a comment to say hi". You feel all excited at the prospect of finding a new bloggy friend. You're feeling quite excited now, so you go back to this person's blog to read the reply, only to discover your comment is still unanswered. How do you feel? Sad? Dejected? Hurt? Embarrassed? Would you be keen to go back to that blog? This is how I (and many people) feel when I leave comments on a blog and don't get a reply. Don't be that person!

Essentially, commenting is about giving AND taking. We all love comments don’t we? Some of us even had a little image in our sidebar asking people to leave a comment. But, the thing with comments is that you take comments...you have to GIVE comments. It's a 2 way thing...and it's good manners too.

Here is my strategy for dealing with comments:

1. If somebody comments on my blog for the first time, I try to respond to their comment and also leave a comment on their blog, even if it's just to say "thanks for leaving your comment, I'm glad you enjoyed my post".

2. If you have a large, busy blog, you probably can't keep up with every new comment, so answer your
comments in bulk. Wait until you have 2 or 3 comments and then reply to them. This is easier if you enable comment moderation because you can keep a mental note of what posts your comments relate to.

3. Enable comment moderation so that you know you have a comment which needs replying to. It also keeps spam off your blog.

4. If somebody who hasn't commented for a while leaves you a new comment, welcome them back and sound pleased to see them.

5. Get rid of the "Captcha" thing, it takes too long to load, readers hate it, dyslexic people tremble at the thought of it (trust me) and if you have comment moderation anyway then Captcha is pointless. Get rid of it...today :)

6. Allocate some time to reply to your comments. I do mine before going to bed. I save up all the comment moderation emails and then do them before going to bed.

How do you deal with your comments? Do you have any tips for dealing with your comments? Let us know by leaving a comment.

My main blog is my blog design blog, Adori Graphics, where I sell custom blog makeovers and premade blog templates as well as  posting tutorials and blog freebies. I consider myself an "ethical blogger" and believe that everyone should give something back to the blogging community, which is why I write guest blogger articles, offer sponsorships to blogger conferences, sponsor giveaways and run a free blog makeover program called Write From The Heart.

Thanks Louise!  Head over to her blog and be sure to check it out!
